After the successful Open Day, we are on a roll again with jam packed rehearsals and a lot of dancing in store for all the members :)

Firstly, the timetable for this week is UPDATED!!! Please go check flaredance.com's timetable!
I sincerely hope that everyone can make it to most of the rehearsals because if you want to PERFORM, our first gig-- the Nightmarket event is nearing (April 7th)! Choreographers will be holding auditions very soon for those that are interested in performing :)

Speaking of which, please remember to reply Izzie's email about VOLUNTEERING for the Nightmarket ASAP! We are hoping to make profit off of this event for Flare because a rich club can bring more benefits for its members! And plus, we would love everyone to be more involved in Flare :)

Next, I would also like to thank EVERYONE for attending Open Day last Saturday! It was hugely successful and also great to see so many old and new faces of Flare dancing together :) because this is what Flare is all about- the joy of dance!

An EXCITING & NEW start!!!

Hello new and old Flarians!

If you are new to Flare Dance Ensemble, WELCOME TO THE DANCE FAMILY! We all have a huge heart and passion for dance and we are so happy that you chose to be part of us! This is the first new blog post of the 2011 school year and I'd first like to congratulate my fellow committee members for pulling off such a successful O-Week!

We signed up 306 members at our O-Week booth and we're hoping for more throughout these first few weeks of uni. According to our Pres Sher, we have also put on the best O-Week performance ever! Featuring snippets from our "Tenth Avenue" annual production from 2010, we give uni students a first glance of who and what Flare is. I hope whoever got to see the performance enjoyed it! But if you'd like to watch it again, it's posted on Facebook in our group "Flare dance ensemble!"

This new semester with Flare is bound to be a great one- we have so many choreographers interested in busting a move for this year's gig performances- the first one coming up is the Nightmarket event in the first week of April, so please check the timetable that will be released tonight @ flaredance.com !!! Flare Dance Ensemble 2010 Annual Production

The time has come for us to announce, in a very exciting and hyped up fashion, our annual production! Flare Dance Ensemble brings you Tenth Avenue, a requiem where we dare to live our dreams and a night of sweet oblivion.

In conjunction with our tenth year anniversary, Tenth Avenue was conceptualized based on the simple philosophy that dance exists in every corner of a city. With a fantastic display of a diverse range of dance styles encompassing the ever passionate steps of Latin American, the beautiful form of Contemporary, the explosive style of Breakdancing, the groovy moves of Urban Choreography, the expressive emotions of Lyrical Jazz, the sizzling flair of Girl's Hip Hop and finally the conventional moves of Jazz.

Join us as we take you through the deepest trenches of the bustling city with 13 pieces of raw emotion and power, featuring the return of our most respected founder, Jane Khoo, who will be delivering a collaboration piece between the dancers of sister club Flare Dance Company and our very own Ensemble.

Hello all!

As we advance into week 6 of the semester, it can only mean one thing, the much awaited second Mid-Review is just around the corner! Friday of week 7 to be exact! So I hope you're all ready to rock things out in front of our Artistic Director, Ness.

But before we get into the dirty details of the review, here's a recap of what Flare has been busy with.

As you all know, Flare staged our very first showcase, The Candyshop not so long ago at La Di Da. The showcase was a commercial success attracting a crowd of more than two hundred people!Told ya there were lots of people :)

The Candyshop kicked off with a routine choreographed by our entire committee which was also performed by them to, quite aptly, The Candyshop by 50 Cents. The show went on with various performances by members to popular tunes such as Swing Ya Rag, Tik Tok, Run This Town and more.

The night's atmosphere was cooked up even more when our special guest performers, Mute crew delivered an explosive display of dance that got the crowd going absolutely bananas! The partygoers even began to sing along when the crew took on The Killers' Mr. Brightside.

Also, Melbourne University's Dancesport graced us with an unforgettable Latin routine to Telephone that was also performed by our very own members, Daryl Lee and Michelle Yeo!
The night ended with adrenaline pumping and power-packing routines the likes of Imma Be, Sugar, Lose My Breath and Touch My Body.
Of course, the night's success couldn't have been possible without all your support and hardwork! Hence, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who made the showcase a smashing success! We definitely look forward to seeing your faces in our next event, which quite inarguably is Flare's biggest event of the year, our annual production!

We'll be waiting for you! Yes, in all that glorious sexiness.

Showcase Success!

Hello all!

As I'm pretty sure you know, Flare's first ever showcase The Candy Shop is officially over! Twas an awesome night with top quality dance performances! We performed to a crowd of more than 200 people!

Just posting this up as a shout out to the people that made this showcase possible!

First and foremost, the committee members who organized the whole event in the first place.

The four exec comms that decided to have this event, Shermaine, Bee Bee, Michele and Hervey. The sub comms that worked hard together to ensure this event happened. Special thanks to Shi Mei and the Publicity team as well as Kaeden and the Design Team, Yun Shen and the Ticketing Team, Wei Hao's handling of all online publicity work as IT officer and most importantly, Yvonne who coordinated the event for the night.

Secondly, special thanks to all the choreographers who produced such high quality performances in such a short period of time!

With the showcase done, now its time to look forward to Flare's annual camp! Get excited people! Production rehearsals are slated to begin next week as well, so I hope I'll see all your faces in rehearsals!

Hello fellow Flarians!

As Semester 1 draws to a close with SWOT VAC and the coming exams, Flare Dance Ensemble is excited to announce two major events taking place at the start of Semester 2!
Flare's first ever showcase is set on the 5th of August at 577 Little Bourke Street! The Candy Shop comprises an exciting line-up of dance pieces from different styles ranging from Jazz to Urban Choreography! Taking place at one of Melbourne's most happening night clubs, La Di Da, the showcase will take you through an enticing night of bright lights, power-packed dance moves and trance-inducing music.
Please note that the showcase is also a clubbing event as the dancefloor will be opened to the attendees! So what are you waiting for? Grab your tickets fast before its all sold out as we have very limited number of them! Bring your friends along and dance the night away!

The annual Flare Camp will also be held on the same week on the 6th of August 2010. This 3 days and 2 nights event is a great opportunity for dancers to kick back and relax from all the demanding rehearsals and also for you dancers to get to know each other better! For the price of $137 ($133 for early birds), you get to see a side of your friends you've never seen before and take our word for it, many people reveal their rather...humorous side!

Do hurry up to get yourself signed up as there are only 35 slots available and slots are filling up fast! Again, for more information, please check out our facebook event page!

So yes, get excited with these two events and bear them in mind to make the exam period much less daunting!

Flare So Far...

Hello Flarians! I hope week 8 is treating you all well. Sorry for abandoning this blog for so long, you've got my faulty internet connection to blame for that. Flare has been experiencing a rather fruitful month, I'll let the photos and random anecdotes do the talking.

First off, Flare was invited to perform in the MUOSS Night Market. Apart from the performance, we were also given the opportunity to operate a stall as part of the night market event. Thanks to the tremendous effort put in by our choreographers and dancers, the performance was, in my opinion, a major success. The Flare stall managed to attract the crowd's attention with the sales of delicious food the likes of lok-lok, longan jelly and chocolate fondue.

Days before the actual event, our dancers were given a chance to flaunt their creativity as we were required to decorate our stall based on the Night Market theme 'Around the World. New friendships were forged and old bonds were strengthened as Flarians worked hand in hand to ensure the success of our Night Market stall.

Ever wondered what the performers were up to before the gig? Think along the lines of make-up, running through the routines and just chilling before taking on the stage.

After the highly successful nightmarket performance, Flare also staged a performance at the State Library of Victoria in conjunction with the International Student Day organized by the Australian Federation of International Students and the Victorian Government.

Recently, Flare has also performed at the ICSS and IESS co-organized Cocktail Night held at Biero Bar.

This has truly been a fantastic month for Flare Dance Ensemble and we look forward to providing new dancers a platform to perform and also to continue on with our effort to produce even better dance pieces!

Dancing For The Kids @ Royal Children's Hospital

A couple of weeks ago, I sent out an email asking for volunteers interested in Dancing For The Kids at Royal Children's Hospital. The feedback was astonishing *gives out karma points in dollops* and Flarians are really very charitable people indeed!

Everyone picked up the dance steps really quickly (see! I told you they were easy!). We had lots of fun going NA NA NA NA NA while interlocking elbows and skipping around as well as being imaginary taxi drivers for the day. :P

It was a warm sunny Saturday, and we met at the tramstop before walking over to Royal Children's Hospital on Flemington Road together. Everyone was clad in a multitude of colours, red, blue, green, yellow with headgears, scarfs, fancy earrings...screaming FUN FUN FUN.

We performed at the Starlight Express Room; a room filled with computer games, a stage, pingpong tables, drawing tables and many many more fun-filled activities for the unwell children to hang out at during their stay at Royal Children's Hospital. It is entirely staffed by volunteers, and there are also Captain Starlight shows directly broadcasted to televisions in all the wards at Royal Children's.

Captain Red, who was in charge for the day, informed us that WE WILL BE BROADCASTED LIVE ON TV TO ALL THE WARDS!!!!!!!

No pressure.

Everyone looking nervous as Captain Red introduced us to the crowd.

We performed 4 songs :

3. Upside Down by A Teens
4. Hoedown Throwdown by Miley Cyrus

We only had THREE rehearsals before the performance, and congratulations girls (and guys), it was A JOB WELL DONE! =)

NG strutting his stuff. WE'RE ON TV! I don't know why they thought we were from a dance school though, BUT IT'S AWESOME ALL THE SAME!

There was a little girl, probably 8-9 years old in a wheelchair with lots of supportive equipment, waving her hands in the air while mouthing the lyrics when we performed Hoedown Throwdown...and my heart just melted. ♥

Thank you everyone for volunteering to dance for the kids, I'm sure we put a lot of a smiles on the kids' faces that day, both in the Starlight Express Room and those who had to stay in their beds. Good job!

Well, as many of you may know, this is my last semester on exchange in the University of Melbourne. I was very fortunate to be able to be a part of 2009's production, Maelstrom.
I made many new friends doing that, I am sure that Flare will bring joy to its new members as it did to me.

Sadly, I won't be able to be part of Flare this semester (Even as I type, I have 5 pile of A4 papers lined up on my desk).

Nonetheless, the partay in the park was great! It was an afternoon welcome session for all the new members and for the other members to have some fun. The 60 odd people were divided into four groups and were tasked to do some silly things.

When I arrived at University Square, there was this bunch of people doing a serious group hug!
Anyway, when I got there, the groups were tasked with doing funny things like make a human bicycle...

Hi Flarians,

As all of you know, last week was our Flare Open Day! It was held at The Space and it was great to see so many new faces as well as familiar ones and watching all the enthusiastic dancers trying out the different styles our creative choreographers have set out for us.

So the 1st dance we've tried out was Su Lynn's pop coyote's! gasss..soo...li...na!! It was a really a hot routine! loves!

After that it was Shermaine's Contemporary class! It was really abstract and if i'm not mistaken, the dance was about fear, and overcoming it (forgive me if im wrong xD) So, as the dancers were getting in the mood of the dance, all of a sudden....

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

and the dance studio FLOODED!

and then, we were asked to evacuate the dance studio as it was dangerous with the electricity and water running. sob!

so as the dancers split up to get back home with their own transport (cab,mum,dad,bus) a group of us hopped onto the tram with high hopes that we will get back to the city without fail. Unfortunately, one of the trams broke down and our tram couldn't move on so we have to walk all the way from Albert Park!

and that basically sums up on what we did for Flare Open Day.

Despite the fact that we all got home drenched,cold and tired, it was definitely a day to remember! It was an adventure and just by getting through the hail has brought us even closer. New friendships were made and old friendships were strengthened. And besides, it's sort of like a once(well mayb not once but few?) in a life-time experience!!(Imagine saying this to your pals, IVE been through a HAILstorm HAVE U? MUAHAHAHA)It was really unfortunate that we missed out on Jin's Popping and Shermaine's Jazz class as I really was looking forward to it. But don't worry! Stay tuned on flare's rehearsals timetable for more classes! Oh and if you have missed out on the open day there are more things to look forward to this year too such as Welcome Event this Saturday, MUOSS NightMarket, gig performances, annual production and SO MUCH MORE. Its a sign that an exciting year is layed out ahead of us! Can't WAIT! !!!!

WHAT IS FLARE?

Hey guys! Woot its my first post on the FLARE BLOG XD !!!

O week is now officially over!! All those hours of standing around in the sun and yelling at people to join flare is over...now its time to stand around IN THE STUDIO and yell at people to join flare haha

Ok we wont yell, we'll brainwash people with our hypnotic ass shaking! *moves ass around*

lol anyway lame joke aside, I am writing this post for one reason. During O-week, a lot of people asked me (and I am sure they asked you too), what is flare? What is flare about?

Well when I first started flare all those moons ago, flare to me was about dancing. It was about going to a class, learning the routine and see if I look like those dancers on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE LOL. Then I would go home and sleep or something. That was flare for me many sunshines ago, but it is not flare to me now. Flare is more than just about dancing.

Flare is about meeting new people and having FUN dancing with them, letting your hair down, shaking your ass and stinking up the dance studio, and if you want..you can even go and have dinner with them!! (But you can only go to NOTTURNO or RICE BAR. No other options [dont understand?, join flare and you will know]). Haha but seriously there is something about dancing that makes making friends (good ones) SOOO EASY!! If you ask me, I think its the getting all sweaty with them bit or maybe having a sniff of their hair as it comes slapping in your face. Something like that. haha but Flare to me is not just about having awesome fun and making awesome friends.

It is also about exploring a part of you that was never shown to others. It is about discovering a passion, or a side of you, that you don't even know you have. It is about pushing yourself to be more than what you are and to achieve what you think you cannot achieve . Thus because of Flare, I was able to explore and show others what a slutty dancer I can be, discovered that me trying to LOOK SEXY looks like THIS

and have pushed myself to be more fit and thus was able to develop VISIBLE 6 pack abs...which um is no longer visible..um yea anyway WHAT IS FLARE TO YOU??!?!!? (comment away!)

O-Week: Change of Performance Time

Dear Flarians,

Due to some unexpected changes, the Student Union has reshuffled the performance roster and thus Flare Dance will be scheduled to perform on

Thursday, at 1.25pm

and

Friday, at 1.55pm instead.

The performances (and Flare registration booth!) will be held at the Concrete Lawn, in Melbourne University. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience!

This is also a reminder for all current Flarians who are interested in renewing their membership for 2010 to please do so at the booth.

Flare Dance Ensemble 2010 AGM and Executive Committee Nominations

Dear Flarians,

Our AGM (annual general meeting) will be held this Thursday 29^th of October (Time and Location TBC but it will probably be at 6:00-9:00 in Joe Nap – 2^nd Floor of Union House). In this meeting we will discuss any issues raised by members prior to the meeting (see below). We will also vote in next year’s committee who will make decisions on everyone’s behalf as to what direction to take Flare in, so we’d really like as many people as possible to come along and help decide on Flare’s future.

Executive Committee:

Being on the executive committee is a truly rewarding experience and a great way to have a say in the general running of the club so if you have determination, compassion and a love for dance I highly recommend that you consider running.

The positions are as follows:

President: Oversees the running of the club, including liasing with outside persons, overseeing the executive and sub committee, chairing all committee meetings and acting as the producer for the annual production.

Vice President: Assists the President in the above as well as the Treasurer and Secretary in all of their duties.

Secretary: Maintains all of Flare’s records including stock lists, membership lists and the meeting minutes

Treasurer: Maintains Flare’s accounts including making payments, developing budgets and keeping accurate transaction records

Nominations should be sent to bronwyn@flaredance.com before Wednesday 11:59pm. NB you may nominate yourself or any other member of Flare, however all executive committee members must join the student union for 2010.

All those who stand for the executive committee will need to make a short speech regarding their ideas for Flare and the things they’d like to change, maintain and bring to the club next year, as well as to answer any questions the other members may have.

Sub Committee:

The 2010 sub committee positions will be decided by the newly elected 2010 executive committee with the guidance of the 2009 executive committee. For this reason we will be taking nominations on the night itself rather than in advance. However those interested in being a part of Flare’s committee should consider what type of position they’d be interested in taking. Suggestions for new positions are also welcome.

NB: You can only stand if you’re present at the AGM so make sure if you’re interested in running you come on time and are able to stay until the end.

And this year, Flare Dance Ensemble is swept into a whirlpool through the intense passion and yearning for dance by its dancers. pretty cool, eh?

After months of rehearsing, sweating, bruising, bonding, we have finally reached the peak of Flare Dance Ensemble 2009. OUR ANNUAL PRODUCTION IS HERE! (insert virtual fireworks!)

We just had the tech run rehearsal tonight and we all got a chance to look at the pieces from the show with full costumes and lighting and the result is pure awesomeness! AWESOMENESS!

Every single piece has everything you can ask for in a performance: Technique, excitement, passion... all the things that'll give you goosebumps!

So to those who've bought their tickets and marked their calendars to watch Maelstrom this week: Get super excited!! And if you haven't, drop by at our ticket booth from 12pm-2pm at Union House, next to Plush Fish (sushi cafe). Ticket prices are $12 for students and $15 for adults. Which is such a bargain! You get to watch a live performance for less than $20!

And the venue is ever so convenient- Union House Theatre (next to Plush Fish).

HELLO WORLD!

Whoa this blog has been pretty dead ever since.. heh :)

but fear not! it is back and running! free from crazy 2% and 5% and 10% and sometimes 0% assignments and tests! well, at least for now.

But so far, Flare Dance Ensemble has been very very very very very very very active! Camp, gigs, mid review and preparation for our annual production-Maelstrom! (wheeee!<--- i promise i'm not crazy, i just like lengthening my wordssss)

I MUST MUST MUST tell you guys about the camp this year. BEST CAMP E-V-E-R. like for serious. really.

all i can say is: awesome company, awesome food (we never went hungry), awesome games, awesome weather, awesome bonding (campfire!), awesome making-fun-of-each-other (hello seizure girl Michele and pussycat hottie dudes) - basically all things awesome :D

Camp Camp CAMP!

Hullo Lovely Flarians,

How’s holidays been so far? I hope everyone is having a great time now, we all deserve a short break after all the books we’ve read! :)

Just to let you all know early next semester Flare will be holding its Annual Camp! This year we’ll be heading off to spend a weekend together at Lake Eppalock. This will be a great opportunity to get to know your fellow Flarians way better than before. Trust me, this will be beneficial especially for those planning to be part of production. There is nothing more fun than being with the people who share the same dancing passion as you!

We will be doing activities such as canoeing, archery, campfire, volleyball, and some other group activities, which will of course involve some DANCING! Indoor activities such as pool and table tennis are also available.

Here are the information:
Dates: Aug 7th- Aug 9th 2009Venue: Camp Yumbunga, Lake Eppalock (website: http://www.campyumbunga.com.au/)

Time: Departing Melb Uni at 6pm on 7th, leaving camp around noon on the 9th.

Price: $120 early bird (ending July 17th), $130 normal price (ending July 31st)

Cash payments can be made next week at Bronwyn’s, Yusuf’s and Shermaine’s rehearsals. If you’re not in Melbourne but would like to get in before the early bird ends, fear not! You are allowed to do a bank transfer, how cool is that!

Please take note that everyone will need to bring their own dinner the night we go up (Friday) but all other meals will be provided. Also, you will need to bring your own sleeping bag and remember to bring some warm fuzzy clothings. Early bird will end on the 17th July so make sure you don’t miss out! Hello Happy dancers,

Melbourne University Dancesport Club's most exciting social dance event is approaching! Whether you're a veteran or bedroom-only dancer then the Dinner Dance is for you. We'll have a mix of music catered towards the styles taught within our club as well as other genre's such as hip-hop/pop so you can loosen up and we will be teaching progressive dances for everybody to have fun. You don't even have to know how to dance! Spectators are welcome too!

The night will feature performances from MUDC, Flare Dance Ensemble and other special guests.

The event is at San-Remo Ballroom North Carlton, on Friday 25th September from 6 to 11:30pm, as well as an after-party (to be announced).

The theme of the night is Champagne, so glam-up in gold, silver, sparkles and glitter!

But you'd better be quick as tickets are limited, and to make an already fantastic event even better we are offering those that buy their tickets before 31st July (1st week second semester) an early bird ticket price of $65. This is for members and non-members alike, so bring your friends & family and make it a night!

Reserve your early bird price now by placing a $10 non-refundable deposit per ticket with one of our committee members. Just remember to complete your payment by 31st July to get the early bird price, otherwise you'll have to pay the regular amount.

Tickets bought after the early bird period are $75 for members and $85 for non-members.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm so excited for this year's production!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry :) i get a little carried away sometimes. !!!!!! heh !

Wayyyyy before that, our fellow Flarians performed at the Victorian College of Arts and Nightmarket!

All I remember at VCA is that it was hot. HOT. as in weather HOT. gah! i couldnt open my eyes!!

and i swear that if i cracked an egg on my head, it would have fried itself!!! ooh.. yummy.. now i just need some soy sauce.. heehee soy. HI SOY! have u guys met soy? awesome Korean chick ;)

and my mum and her are from the same hometown in Korea!!!!!! the world just gets smaller and smaller huh?

i found this out when Shawna assigned us as partners to give each other feedback after dancing to Poker Face. not so much feedback after all.. but heaps and loads of bonding!

Anyhooooo, back to VCA, the crowd was AWESOME! we even got an encore :D

Nightmarket was even more exciting! Since the crowd was filled with friends and family, we felt pressured to perform better. Which is good! Nerves are good for better performance. See? I did pay attention in Psyche lectures.

And without the face painting and costumes the entire show would not have looked as amazing as it was! Thank you face painters! And China! for creating cloth. Is that right? or was it paper..

Ive never ever had so much eyeliner on me in my entire life!!! Thanks Sher for being so patient with them tiny eyes :)

the Flarians at the stall did such a GREAT JOB!!! Even though everyone was swamped with rehearsals and uni work, the night was a SUCCESS!

Dance for the Kids! (special guest post)

and so, dance for the kids is over. it was a fantastic experience, i must say. was really looking forward to it, since i love kids and all (not in the paedo way of course).

but yes, after two rehearsals/practices, it was time for the few of us to head down to the royal children's hospital!

we had four pieces in all, most of you flare dancers (and yes, dancers as in those of you who can really dance), would probably have thought that the pieces were really easy if you saw it.

BUT, for us non-experienced dancers, i would say it was an eye-opener! okay at least for me :) heh.

we danced to four songs, namely bring it all back (s club 7), upside down (a*teens), calcutta (the taxi song), and some walking song!

it was funnn, simple steps, but really fun dances. (:

performed for the kids in the starlight express room at RCH, and their participation and all really encouraged us, i suppose (:

having the kids come and join us in the dances, that was a priceless moment. the smiles on their faces, just put a smile on our faces too.

they were such spontaneous kids, and they were just so open about expressing themselves, it was awesome.

i guess the best thing about doing this is just getting the satisfaction of seeing the kids smile (:

we dont know what they've been through, but putting a smile on their faces definitely means alot!

i'm sure any of us who participated in dance for the kids this time round would encourage everyone else to participate in the charity events, it's probably been one of the best experiences i've ever had (:

This year, Flare Dance Ensemble will steal the limelight with JAW-DROPPING dance performances and DROOL-WORTHY drinks and snacks, such as lemonade, corn-in-a-cup and chocolate fondue(yummm) at our very own food stall!

This event is definitely not to be missed! And just by being a Flare member, YOU are already a part of it :D cool, no?

:O i think there's an action movie going on outside my house!! no seriously, why would there be helicopters and police cars on an ordinary Wednesday night? hee but im too lazy to go check it out :) i'll just stick to my current imagination.

i dont know about you but i hate it when i take SOOOO much time opening my Safari, typing in the url, waiting for the page to load and after all the trouble i arrive at a non-updated website >:( what a waste of my life! ahhh im a hypocrite!! :( im terribly sorry if i've made this happen to any of you. but on the bright side, your fingers get a good.. workout?

let's talk about our WELCOME PICNIC!

first of all, i would like to say, IN YOUR FACE MR WEATHERMAN! :) in the nicest way possible.

although we had a change of venue and a not so warm and sunny gathering it was uber fun!

i think the word 'uber' is really odd but interesting. haha!

one of our new members Kristen (spelling?) said i was UBER COOL. hahahahahahhahaha! i mean thanks for calling me uber cool. no one has ever called me UBER COOL. hahahaha am i the only one who finds this amusing? by the way Kristen, you're UBER awesome :)

oh! oh! hahaha i just thought about another funny encounter i had with another Flarian, Loges (spelling? dang im really terrible at spelling :( hehe) during the picnic. its funnier to say in person though.. ahah! i shall use my dialogue writing skills:

Bee: Hi! What's your name?

Loges: Hi! You guess.

Bee: (long pause.. plus awkward and confused face) huh? how do i guess your name? i just met you..

turns out he said LOGES not "you guess".

so.. i cant spell and now i cant hear properly.

okay fine its not that funny but quite self-degrading.. why am i telling u this?

now im terrible at spelling, hearing and im gonna have zero friends!

but im not gonna delete what i wrote cause i spent SOOO much time writing it.

is anyone looking for a brainless, deaf, lonely, lazy, goes wayyy off topic friend?

i did not just type 12 lines of nonsense! okay back to the picnic.. my fave game was charades :D

not only because i was timekeeper/did not have to act out the words like the rest did, but we all got to see very interesting interpretations of Marilyn Monroe and Barrack Obama. i seriously salute the dude who acted out Obama. Respect!

anyways, THANKS guys for fighting through the rain, wind and fire to get to Union House for the picnic :D

weren't the sandwiches and potats salad yummy?!!! i wonder who made them... :) i believe Jun and Chapman highly agree that the sandwiches and potato salad were VERY VERY yummy.

It was great to get to know u guys better that saturday and plus! we had A LOT of fun preparing for it. Let's thank our events coordinator and Flare members who helped put it together!

Those who missed out on the picnic, do not fret! there'll be many more opportunities to get together and have loads of fun throughout the rest of the year :)

i realise how i rant too much.. just a short recap of how things went during Bronwyn's beginner jazz class earlier tonight:

I LOVE the room at the Arts Centre! its so clean and bright and the sound system is awesome!

ooh and after Bron's class i wandered around the other parts of that floor, and through one of the room doors i heard this girl/lady/woman/man? singing!! she/he was sooo good! can i just say, i was admiring his/her talent, im no stalker :)

anyways, Bron taught us the very very important basics of Jazz dance. All the techniques we learned tonight are vital to becoming a better dancer. for real! after a few more times practising on our turns, kicks and step ball changes, we'll be stage ready in no time! :D wheee production!

Hope u Flarians enjoyed it and i'll see you in rehearsals!

p.s: i hope im not the only one who gets cross-eyed after staring into a microscope. if that's the case, there goes my eyesight :(

Oh no, Mr Weatherman! -Change of venue for Flare Picnic

Hello Flarians!

As you all know, the Flare Picnic is going to be held on this coming Saturday, 14th of March at the Royal Botanical Gardens.
However, due to some unfortunate weather forcasts that says its most likely going to rain tomorrow (ARGH), we have decided to play it safe and hold the picnic at Melbourne University instead.
I sincerely apologise on behalf of the commitee (and the weather, ha) for this terrible inconvenience.

u know, right after i posted about the lost umbrella, i lost MY umbrella.. sigh.

my beautiful Korean Banana Umbrella. i hope you're doing well my love. and i pray that we'll meet again!

i blame this all on Calculus>:( if only Calculus never existed, I wouldn't be taking that subject, I wouldn't have attended the Calculus lecture and I wouldn't have lost my beautiful Korean Banana Umbrella.

haha. well the blame's not totally on Calculus. maybe Biomed.. or the rain..

anyway! let's talk about the recent Flare events!

I couldn't make it to Irvin's class the other day but I heard it was awesome! well done Flarians :)

And for those who went for Sher's Run The Show, we all got a REALLY good workout. I am still aching from last saturday! But in a good way :D I hope everyone else is enjoying the aching with me.

P-P-P-POKER FACE update:

first of all, i've never heard so many "ohh"'s in my life!

the Flarians who attended Shawna's rehearsal yesterday would understand :)

oh! CONGRATULATIONS to those who passed the sudden audition for performing Poker Face in the upcoming gigs! i see talent everywhere!

and to those who didnt make it this time, NO WORRIES :) the fact that all of you managed to learn such a challenging routine in a crowded room and still be able to perform it in small groups is a HUGE achievement!

you girls were so full of energy and sass ;) and the dudes too! jaw dropping stuff, people.

there will be many many other opportunities to perform throughout the year so don't give up and look forward to these opportunities and our ANNUAL PRODUCTION!

oh yes! dont forget about the Flare Welcome Picnic this Saturday, 14th March from 11am to 2pm at Royal Botanical Gardens. A chance to meet your fellow Flarians and F-O-O-D.

Wednesday's rehearsals will be at Room 419 Arts Centre. Bigger dance space! So try to make it to Ness's workshop and Irvin's Hip Hop class this wednesday.

And on Saturday we have Bronwyn (Boss)'s Beginner Jazz Routine and Sher's "cardio" session. haha! so after stuffing our faces with food at the picnic we can make our way to class to get rid of any guilt :)

i'm quite excited to see Bron's routine! So mysterious, it doesn't say what song she's using. heehee. SUSPENSE!

Somehow nowadays, everyone is falling down :S as in not emotionally but physically.

So far 3 of my friends have fell down. One on the way to College Square (who was laughed at by the girls walking behind him) , one on her heels and one off the cycling machine in the gym.

hahahah! oh gosh im so mean.

So Flarians, please take care and try not to fall down and hurt those precious dancing feet!

But i won't mind you FALLING head over heels for me :D

New Faces in Familiar Places!

hello Flarians!

how has your first week been so far? busy? exciting? educational?

i learnt some things:

1) Practicals start at 2pm not 2.15pm

2) Not to panic when u get a text from VicPolice. It does not necessarily mean you're a convict

FIRST FLARE REHEARSAL!

It was so so packed at Des Connor today. Which is extremely good :) but also very hot and stuffy. But sweat is good for health right? Let's not talk about the smell..

I was so excited to see so many new faces and talents! too bad there were too many of you to get to know all of your names.. but im pretty good at remembering faces. i hope :)

for the old Flarians, wasn't it nostalgic to dance in Des Connor again? a little dusty but full length mirror!!

ooh, we apologise for the blackout earlier. haha. our darling treasurer Shermaine then decided that we should all be 'Dancing In The Moonlight'-Toploader. Excuse her, she doesnt make good jokes. But she's pretty fun to laugh at. Believe me Flarians, that is something to look forward to >:)

Thankfully! the Union House dude came to the rescue! thanks Union House dude.

we should all applaud awesomeNESS for conducting an awesome workshop and SHAWNAnana for teaching us a challenging and fun piece to 'Poker Face' :D

Dear 2009 Flarians!

To all of our new Flare members – welcome to Flare! The committee is looking forward to getting to know all of you in the coming weeks of classes and events. To our returning members – welcome back! We know we are going to have just as much fun together this year as last.

Flare Classes:

This year we're going to run our classes a little differently. We’ll be running technique classes, which will focus on technique and skill development, as well as classes in which a routine will be taught and built on each week. These routines will be used for our upcoming performances so those interested in performing with us should choose which routines they’re interested in and then attend as many classes for those routines as possible. If you just want to learn the routines for fun you are also welcome to attend these classes on a casual basis. You do not need to pre-book for any class, you simply check out the rehearsal schedule, choose which class you would like to go to and then turn up!

One of the classes we are introducing this year is a basic technique class, the ‘beginner workshop’, which will aim to teach the basic skills needed in all styles of dance. The class will be run by Ness, our artistic director, and we encourage everyone interested in improving their dance abilities to attend this class.

Rehearsal Schedule:

Our rehearsal schedule will change each week so make sure you check the website regularly to find out when and where classes will be. The schedule for the first week of classes is now available on the rehearsal page of the website (www.flaredance.com). Please note that we cannot teach all styles every week so if the style you’re interested in learning is not scheduled for the first week please check back later for the second and third week.

Venue Locations:

We are still confirming some of our venues for 2009 however most classes will be run on campus and information regarding the location of our venues can be found on the rehearsal page of the website.

Welcome Picnic:

Flare’s first event for the year will be a picnic on Saturday the 14th of March at the Botanical Gardens. The cost is just $2 and we’ll be taking bookings during classes over the next two weeks. This event will be a great opportunity to get to know each other so come along and join us for some games and a picnic lunch!

HELLO all you dancers, dance enthusiasts, people who just love watching dance, even those who dance in their rooms when no one's watching and some who coincidentally stumbled on this blog?

WELCOME TO FLARE DANCE ENSEMBLE 2009!!! yay!!!!!!!

i'm Ng Bee Bee (this is my real name, i seriously kid u not) and i havent blogged in a while.. let's hope i maintain this blog yea? :D

anyhoo! here on this blog i am going to post awesome latest info about Flare Dance Ensemble, awesome Flare events, awesome links to Flare photos and videos and if i get lonely and bored, i'll talk about random stuff like my feelings.. i bet you guys're praying i dont get lonely and bored. pffft

ooh! i can talk about interesting stuff that happens during rehearsals and events so those new to Flare or those who haven't been in touch can find out what's happening! so cool!! i'm thinking of this on the spot as i write so excuse my enthusiasm :)

2009! New Year, New You!! those from Malaysia might be familiar with this. it's the tagline for Celebrity Fitness for their new year promotion thingy. theyre quite happening now, they have like trampoline classes! hahaha! so fun! im going off topic :(

you know whatd be sad? if no one read this blog. so please bear with me! i promise to make this blog as interesting as possible! hopefully one day i can become famous like Perez Hilton did with his celeb gossip blog. haha nah i dont think so.

Let's talk about MY experience with Flare. this is my second year in Flare and last year was amazing! Juggling both college and Flare wasnt easy at times but all of it was really worth it. i swear i will never ever exchange those moments for the world.

from Flare Camp to Nightmarket gig to Escapade to the guest performance for Flare Dance Company to Eclipse- every event gave me so many memories and friends for life who share the same passion for dance. awwww :) and tons of photos! for serious the photos are clogging my iPhoto.

let's take a moment to thank our 2008 committee members for helping all of us build such beeeeautiful memories :D

ive an idea! let's list down the pros of joining Flare:

Flare's Annual General Meeting will be held the week after production. Elections for the 2008 Executive Committee and Sub-Committee heads will also take place at the AGM. - Basically overlooks the organization and functioning of the club.
- Overlooks the sub-committees
- Liase with people/companies/contacts outside Flare

VICE-PRESIDENT:
- Assists the president with all of the above.

SECRETARY:
- Book rehearsal rooms
- Take minutes

- Maintains members list and details

TREASURER:
- keeps accounts & develop the budgets throughout the year for events and production

Note that the roles of the four executive committee members are not actually this clear cut. Often they will share responsibilities.

SUB-COMMITEE NOMINATIONS

Only sub committee heads will be elected at the AGM. An additional meeting will be held next year to recruit any members eager to assist and fill the remaining positions on the sub-com.

DESIGN:
- Keep track of Flare costumes, arrange costume sessions and maintain the standard and quality of costumes for all pieces.

As mentioned during the mid choreo review, we will be having a fundraiser!

This year we are opting to have a Flare Clubbing event which we are co-hosting with Melbourne Uni & Monash Dance Sport. The main reason we have chosen this is in hopes of creating stronger bonds and friendships between the members of the club. All proceeds will go into compensating for the money used in room bookings.

Therefore we need all cast members to sell AT LEAST 4 tickets, because without the money for the rooms, we'd have no place for rehearsals.

Info is as below:

1) All dancers are required to sell 4 tickets to the event. (Your own ticket is included in the four tickets)
Tickets to The Escapade will be distributed to choreographers. They will make sure that each dancer gets 4 tickets at least. Do ask them for more if needed. All money collected from ticket sales must be returned to Su Lynn by 7th Oct 2008.

2) Tickets are priced at $20. For every 10 tickets sold, you will get a free ticket

3) Table bookings are now open so book your tables now. Minimum purchase of one bottle to book one table. So hurry, as tables are going fast. (do specify if you want your table in the latin/RNB room). A bottle purchased will get you two free tickets. Two bottles purchased per table will get you 5 free tickets.

What's happened, and what's coming up?

So sorry people that this blog has been left untouched for a month plus. Will try to recount all that has happened within the month in Flare.

Most important things first! Flare will be setting up a table at Union House everyday from 12-2pm beginning next week (excluding the spring break week). This is to allow cast members to collect their Eclipse tickets to be sold, and also to sell tickets! So bring your friends, tell them about it and SELL OUR TICKETS OUT! We're counting on all of YOU to make this happen. It definitely will!

There was Mid Choreo Review at Dancehouse. Was good fun seeing the rest of the cast members, especially those who didn't dance in the same pieces that we were in. Even more awesome to see how much progress each piece has made since day one, to see what they've all been working so hard for. And I must say, the results are massive :) This year's production is looking mightily good, so keep working hard guys and girls. Remember to turn up for rehearsals all the time now, this time is the most crucial! Dance all the way!

Flare performed at the Festival of Nations! We had a few hip hop routines, coupled with a few jazz ones. The effect? We had HEAPS of fun dancing! I think the crowd loved it too. Remember, those who are interested in doing gigs, there're currently gigs open for you to turn up to and learn the steps. Check out the rehearsals page on the website!

Charity Dance at Royal Children's Hospital.

There are many different ways you can do charity. The usual ways are to donate money and to be a volunteer. However, recently, I discovered an interesting way to do charity and that is to Dance!

There were several of us who participated in the charity dance for the Royal Children’s Hospital organised by Flare Dance Ensemble. We learnt and performed a total of 4 dance routines which had steps that were fun and easy to learn! Trust me, a few of us do not have any dancing background but we manage to do it in just 3 rehearsals!

On the actual day, we performed on stage for the little ones in the hospital’s entertainment room. Although there were only a few children, we enjoyed ourselves totally. There was an adorable toddler dancing enthusiastically even after our performance, and that really touched our hearts knowing that she enjoyed herself!

Dancing for the children can put a smile to their faces and through this fulfilling experience; I have also made friends with the other “Flarians”. We had a wonderful and fun-filled morning dancing for the children. Your smile can bring joy to the children. Believe me, try it and you will know!

Hey people! Working hard at dance rehearsals, I presume?
If you are working hard, good on ya! Just remember to start working hard for the exams too!

Anyway, as we all know, we're gearing up towards the production that is coming up in October. It's going to be such an exciting time, dancing with your fellow dancers through weeks and weeks of rehearsals, finding the most suitable costumes to match the dance, getting sores, bruises but yet feeling good about it, seeing 'Flare Dance Ensemble presents.." up on the Union House Theatre board.

Are you excited yet!?

Let's start kicking off things related to this year's production by first coming up with a NAME and THEME for Production! Think about something along the lines of inclusiveness, unity, cohesiveness, togetherness, etc because this is the sort of picture we want to paint about Flare this year. We are ONE BIG FAMILY! :)

Fun, Fulfilling Flare-filled Weekend.

Flare had Trivia Night on Friday!
It was a fund raising activity to raise money to cover cost for those expensive rooms that are booked for dancing. The turnout was great, thank you people for coming to support and also asking your friends along.

We had fun answering trivia questions, finding out bizarre new things we never knew, trying to get 3 lines of Bingo by dancing with as many people as possible, battling it out in the centre of the circle, etc. Feels good to see all of you having so much fun together! :)

We managed to raise enough to pay for about a month's worth of room bookings, so don't stop supporting Flare! Production is coming soon, Semester 2 Week 11!
Mark it down in your diaries!
Also, a bunch of us headed down to the Royal Children's Hospital to put up a short dance performance for them. Just like before, the kids blessed us more than anything else.

To see the little girl up the front jumping out of her seat and trying to follow the beat by bobbing up and down, priceless. To receive words of appreciation for the hard work we put in, priceless. To have the opportunity to use dance to bring joy to others, priceless.

Casting Week Begins!

Hey all, casting week is here!

21st April - 24th April

We will be conducting production castings this week, hence there will not be regular classes. The session times posted on the website for this week are dedicated to the teaching of CASTING ROUTINES.

Those interested to participate in Production 2008 need to:

1. Pick any 2 out of the 4 routines to learn

HIP HOP JAZZ

HIP HOP STREET

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ

THEATRICAL

(There are 2 separate sessions allocated to EACH dance, so you only need to show up for ONE session)

2. You will need to register for a time slot for casting(auditions) during any of these practice sessions (MON & TUES)

3. Castings(auditions) will be held on Wednesday and Thursday (only come during your allocated time slots - see bullet point number 2)

4. There will be optional sessions held at 6:00 to 6:30 on Wednesday and Thursday before castings begin for the revision of steps (casting routines). Those who wish to revise the routines taught during the week are welcome to participate.

Don't think of it as a scary, oh-no-I-can't-dance-in-front-of-strangers situation. It's a very open and friendly casting process, and we just want to see that you're dedicated and passionate about wanting to be in the production. Dance-wise, practise makes perfect right? See ya there guys!

A very big THANK YOU to all of you who supported Flare in the Night Market on Fri in every way possible:
- committing so much time and turning up consistently for rehearsals and putting on such a wonderful show,
- volunteering your time and energy and lovely voices to help mend the food stall,

Night Market.

Hey Flare!

Come down to the Concrete Lawn (near the Union House) on Fri, 11th Apr and watch your fellow dancers dance their hearts out!
The performance will be starting at 6.45pm but be there slightly earlier and get yourself good standing areas to cheer us on.
It will feel so much better for those on stage when they see familiar faces :)

And come buy food from the Flare food stall! We will be selling corn in a cup, nachos and cheese fries.
If you can, be clad in a disco-themed attire when you come by and visit us.
We're aiming for a disco theme for our stall so be part of it by dressing in your glittery and shimmery disco-ey accessories and clothes!

Volunteers Needed!

This is a call for help to all Flarians!

As stated in the post below, Flare will be putting up a food stall as well as performing several dance routines. Therefore, we are short handed when it comes to running of the stall (i.e cooking food, selling food, collecting cash!)

Don't worry if you think cooking is not what you're good at, or that you're terrible with handling money, etc.
We really need your help and we'll teach you what to do. It'll be fun, you get to be on the other side of the table while everyone else pushes their way around to try to get to you! :)
It's not pure hard labour, promise!

So please drop an email to publicity@flaredance.com stating that you are interested to help, along with your contact number.
Volunteers will be running on a shift basis, so you'll still be able to go to other stalls and enjoy the night.

For those who missed Picnic in the Park and for those who had heaps of fun at the picnic, here's an event that you should not miss!

It's time for Flare's Welcome Camp!!

It is a really really good chance to get to know your fellow dancers and friends better, especially those planning to be part of the production later in the year.
We'll be having activities such as archery, kayaking, flying fox, campfire, talent night and many other group games. You don't get to do this everyday, so take time off and have some fun with Flare! These 2 days will only be dedicated to F-U-N!

Date: 25th April - 26th April (Anzac Weekend)

Royal Children's Hospital Gig.

A bunch of us headed down to Royal Children's Hospital yesterday and today afternoon to perform a short and interactive dance for the kids there.

We danced to songs that we grew up to, lol, well at least for some of us - Bring It All Back, Calcutta (Taxi Driver), Footloose and Upside Down.

We spent hours rehearsing the steps, getting the sequence of steps right, making sure we could dance without the mirrors, etc. And when the time came for us to perform, all the jitters just flew away once we saw the kids.

There were only about 10-14 kids each time we danced. But oh boy, how different it is when they are your audience. Their gleaming eyes never leave you, because they really want to see what's happening on stage.

You see their little faces from the stage, and you try your best to reach out to them and get them to smile. Your own face turns unbelievably smiley, your body language invites them to stand up and dance together with you.

And when they do stand up, extending their little hands to grab yours, that's when your heart melts because you know you've made this child's day. Teaching them simple dance steps, watching them mirror you and seeing them just laughing helplessly cuz they don't think they can do the steps, really the experience is beyond priceless.

We had a segment of 'freestyling' with the kids and there were 2 small boys who could do breakdancing stunts and there was this sweet girl who knew how to spot when I twirled her around. Fantastic, totally awesome.

Do jump at the opportunity of doing a charity performance with Flare.
The bliss of knowing that you made someone's day is really irreplaceable.

BBQ, sandwiches, salad, scavenger hunts, stretching awkwardly to form long long lines, finding monster trees..
What better way to spend Easter Sunday!

The weather was splendid, with the sun beaming right at all of us. Coupled with the yummy food, fun group games and awesome company, I'd say that Flare's first event of 2008 has truly set the standards to our future events - all our events will be the epitome of much fun and fulfilment!

Table Sitting.

Hey people, it's not long before the new semester starts again on 3rd March.
Hope everybody's had a well-deserved rest and a good break before kicking start a brand new semester in the year 2008.

As new beginnings go, we need fresh blood.
There're a lot of people out there who love to dance or who are interested in learning a few dance styles or two. Especially with shows like So You Think You Can Dance hitting the Australian crowd, you'd expect even more enthusiastic people wanting to learn more about dance.

I'm sure we all agree that Flare can give them all that. So let's be there to encourage them to join Flare! We need help with table sitting, people who will be at the Flare table to share their stories with them. They will definitely be attracted when they see a group of like-minded people, all with the same passion for dance.

Rehearsals will commence this weekend, on either Friday (22 Feb) or Saturday (23 Feb) at Dancehouse. Confirmation will be updated on the blog and through your emails.
Gigs take place on 28th and 29th February, from 1-3pm.

Also, there will be an introductory dance workshop (for the public) held by Flare on the 27th of February. It will be conducted by our senior member, Sharlene Tai. We welcome the new year with new things, more gigs and a whole year of fun to look forward to! :)
Hopefully all of you are having a good holiday, enjoying every single bit of the free time and freedom!

So here's a sneak peek of what's in store for the few months ahead of year 2008:

1) Orientation Day gig

This is happening on the 28th and 29th Feb 2008. A new set of routines will be taught at Dancehouse starting 22nd Feb 2008. Another email reminder will be sent before then. All are welcome to be part of the gig and it will be a great "reunion" for 2008.

Also, we need volunteers for table sitting to sign up new members on those dates. The performance will last for only 7 minutes so we will need at least 2 people at the table during the performance. Performers are also welcomed to help with table sitting.

2) Royal Childrens Hospital gig

This will be on the 22nd of March 2008. Very simple routines will be used. If you are unable to commit to the rehearsals, just come along to say hi to the children. You won't know how much it means to the children to just see those lovely smiles on your faces. So come along, and make your Saturday a very fulfiling one.

3)Teaching

This is an invitation for Flare's current members to have a chance to TEACH this year. Teach classes at the beginning of each year or even volunteer to choreograph for gigs! This is a chance to get to know yourself better and achieve something you might have wondered if you were capable of. Looking at production last year, we were truly able to achieve something many would not be able to proudly say they achieved as well. So give yourselves a pat on the backs and try something new as well. Come join in the fun! Those interested in teaching feel free to reply or ask any questions. Regarding the gigs, an update will be sent before rehearsals start.

Flare on the Great Victorian Bike Ride 2007

The Great Victorian Bike Ride is an annual cycling event run by Bicycle Victoria. It is the largest self supported bike tour in the world spanning 9 days and an average distance of 550km. Every year, it attracts an average number of 3500 cyclists from pre-schoolers to great grandparents.

Luxuries include sleeping in tents, dying in 35 degree weather (or the occasional hypothermia), using portable showers and loos....Did I mention having a million flies buzz around you? It's no walk in the park but it's the best experience ever!

Last year, Alex, Bud, Kel, Shar and Joon embarked on the ride together and performed a dance routine at talent night. Their...*ahem*...outstanding...*cough*...performance impressed everyone and lead to talks with the activities manager to return the next year to host dance workshops!

And it worked out!

So, this year Flare returns to the bike ride with an even bigger team! Ness, Xiaoyun, Shar, Am, Vinh, Bronwyn, Sze Ching, Joon and Ian will be there for Day 1-3 (Nov 24-26) of the ride, having fun with the flies and the cow dung teaching dance! We hope to do Flare proud as we go 'regional' and spread the good name of Flare among all sorts of target audiences- little kids, high schoolers, old people, out-of-towners, country-siders...lots of people we will otherwise never get to meet!

Sadly, this year we won't be riding- we will only be volunteering. But Shar would like to propose that next year we go as cyclists on the full 9 days! (although this time we have to get a charity to sponsor us and raise money so we don't have to pay!) Anyone up for it? :)

It'll come and go in no time, so put your all into it!
Don't get discouraged by comparing with others, you're doing this for yourself :)

Poise 2007 was a great sucess with sell-out nights and rave reviews! Our technical standard has undoubtedly increased and the facial expression and ability to put feeling into dance was amazing! (Take it from some 'oldies' that there was once a period in time when Flare only knew how to dance and not how to put any emotion into it- dance is not just about the technicality, it's about telling a story!) A big *pat on the back* to all the choreographes, dancers, lighting and backstage crew...we did it!

Choreographed and performed by past and present Melbourne University students, it features a wide range of styles from ballet, jazz and contemporary to hip-hop, cabaret and Chinese dance!

Okay, so this blog is getting mouldy like last week's bread. But before you write it off just yet, let's be helpful in assisting the events committee plan our pre-production party!

We had our very first pre-production party last year and it was a nice dinner where we all dressed up in our pretty dresses and shirts. This year, Bud is wondering if you would still want to pay a bit for a nice dinner and have the fun of dressing up and seeing each other in clothes other than bummy trackies, OR would you rather attend a (much cheaper or free, if possible) beach party (at the nearest beach we can get to the city) where we can all just chill and mingle and have fun in a more relaxed environment?

According to an article published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 20 August 2007, so many employees click away on Facebook at work that an internet filtering company estimates the site may be costing Australian businesses $5 billion a year or more!

Flare's Amazing Race- 26 August

Photos are scattered around with various people and may be hard to collect but basically this is the story of what happened at the race for the curious:

It started off as a rainy Sunday but that didn't deter the 5 teams from turning up to start their day bright and early...although some needed more coaxing and wake-up calls than others!!

The race began at about 10.00pm at Carlton Gardens. As you've watched in the actual Amazing Race TV show, we soon learnt that the fastest are not necessary the quickest- it really depends on your sheer luck sometimes- whether your team's clues have mysteriously disappeared, whether you catch the tram just on time or have to wait 10 minutes for it, whether you misinterpret the clue and go the wrong way, whether you accidentally jump aboard the wrong tram or take the long way....

As it was, all of the above happened plus more- the race also just HAD to fall on the one day most of the tram lines were under repair!!!

Although some of us visited the stations in different orders, here's basically the list:

STOP 1:
Carlton Gardens- each team was assigned their own 'plot of land' and had to find the clues hidden in the garden.

STOP 2:
THE CLUE: Heffenan Lane will enlighten you!
THE DESTINATION: Heffenan Lane which is located between Russell and Swanston Street, Lonsdale and Little Bourke Street.
THE TASK: We were given a paper with quotes to complete and had to search for them on various signboards in the lane.

STOP 3:
THE CLUE: Only one single word- "GUGGENHEIM".
THE DESTINATION: The National Gallery of Victoria at St Kilda Road which was having its Guggenheim exhibition.
THE TASK: Run inside and all over the place and find the answers to various questions such as how many horses they were on a stone sculpture and who designed the glass hall.

STOP 4:
THE CLUE: Simply the picture of the guy in this week's Question of The Week.
THE DESTINATION: The Parliament House at Spring Street.
THE TASK: Draw what Australia means to you on a piece of paper then explain it to the camera. Oh, and don't forget to sing that Qantas "I STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME" song at the top of your lungs on the parliament steps for the whole world to stop and stare and wonder what's up with these crazy bunch of Asians.

STOP 5:
THE CLUE: The front page of an exam sheet.
THE DESTINATION: The Royal Exhibition Building at Carlton Gardens (where most faculties have their exams).
THE TASK: Learn a dance routine and perform it for the camera.

STOP 6:
THE CLUE: What infamous criminal was executed at the Melbourne Gaol and when? (Take the City Circle tram and find out!)
THE DESTINATION: The city circle tram heading for the gaol!
THE TASK: Listening to the commentary over the noisy people in the tram to find out it was Ned Kelly in 1880.

STOP 7:
THE CLUE: A picture of pirate skull/ship with the name Sea Shepphard
THE DESTINATION: Docklands Habour to find the Save-The-Whale ship called Sea Shepphard
THE TASK: Make up a skit (which was different for each team but generally involved plastic swords, pirates, sea monsters and deaths in one way or another) and act it out for the camera. (mind you there were people everywhere!)

STOP 8:
THE CLUE: A picture of Victoria Market with an instruction to find Vee.
THE DESTINATION: Victoria Market on Elizabeth Street
THE TASK: Well, first there was the task of finding a girl dressed in black and her sunnies who could be anywhere in the gigantic market (this took quite a long time for some teams!). Once we got there, we had to get a 'Pink Lady' for each member (the organisers probably decided people would guess too easily it were apples so put a picture of a playboy bunny next to the instruction to screw us up); and also go to some reptile shop and count the number of water snakes (first you had to realise there were TWO tanks, secondly you had to try and count them while they were wriggling and slithering all over the place and tangling themselves up with each other).

STOP 9:
THE CLUE: All the clues so far had numbers written on the corner of them. Putting all the numbers together and figuring out what they meant would bring you to your next station.
THE TASK: Realising they weren't intelligent codes or should be translated into letters or anything like that- it was Shawna's telephone number and you had to call her for your next destination!
THE DESTINATION: Flagstaff Gardens for the finishing line + BBQ

The winners of the race was team 'Eekies' comprising of Amabel, Jojo, Aileen (Jojo's sister), and Beatrice. Congratulations to them! :)

The whole race took roughly 3-4 hours in total and was probably more difficult and tiring than anyone expected! However, all in all, it was also heaps of fun and was a real challenge to most. We ate our fill and went home with aches all over our body from the running.

Heaps of thanks to the organisers- Bud, Vee and Shawna for putting together the amazing day!! It was certainly nothing like any of us had ever done before and was quite a new and awesome experience! Hopefully we can make this an annual event!! :)

The Amazing Race was a blast! From Carlton to Melbourne to St.Kilda to Docklands to Flagstaff Gardens for a nice, sunny BBQ, the 5 teams had to do everything from learning a dance routine to singing that Qantas song "I STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME" on the top of our voices parliament steps (sure attracted a lot of attention from the people at the tram stops) to have to counting weird water snakes at some reptile shop in Victoria Market.

In all the fun (and pain from the running from station to station as most of the tram lines were under repair!), we also learnt interesting things about each other. One of them was that when a clue was given that was a piece of paper with only THIS picture...

...most people didn't have a clue who the guy was (lest where to run to next)! And this included people who have lived in Melboune for 5 years!

Now, this is not about having an interest in the field he is in- it is basic news headlines that airs in between your TV program or on the front page of the newspaper you let your dog poop on. Is it really possible for international students to live years in Melbourne and not know how much influence he has been having on our daily lives?

Thus, this question of the week is in aim of seeing how blissfully ignorant we all really are to the happenings around us...

We would like to say a big CONGRATULATIONS to her on her official graduation TODAY; as well as wish her ALL THE BEST as she returns to Singapore tomorrow to begin a new phase of her life. We will be missing her very very very much and we're sad she wasn't in Flare longer!!!

POISE Tickets!

Tickets for Flare's 2007 production 'POISE' is now available! The production will be held from the 11th to 13th October (Thurs-Fri) at the Union House Theatre in Melbourne Uni. Tickets are priced at $12 for students and $15 for adults. If you would like to purchase them, please contact your fellow Flare friend, email bookings@flaredance.com, or visit the table we will be setting up in the weeks to come at Union House Theatre during lunchtime (more details to come on when we will start doing this).

Dancers, please pick up the tickets you have to sell (5 tickets for each night) from Winny. Please note you also get one complimentary ticket to give to a friend/family but you will have to let Winny know the date and the name of the person ASAP at bookings@flaredance.com because they are a limited number of them for each night. In short, if you don't get in early, you may not get the night you want.
